1996 Mazda MPV

Mazda's "Multi Purpose Vehicle" is introduced formally in 1989 as a four door
minivan with five to seven passenger capacity. The standard 2.6-liter inline 4-cylinder
engine can be used with either the five-speed manual or four speed automatic transmission.
To meet the changing fad and close competition in the ever changing car market,
a standard side airbag on the passenger's side is added together with a four wheel
antilock brakes which replace the usual rear ABS. Also added is the fourth door
in the driver's side. With this feature, easy passenger entry and cargo loading
is not a difficulty. Refinements and changes are limited. However the car's rear
wheel drive system is much improved for better traction and handling specially
in steep and slippery locations.
